Alappuzha Emerging as Preferred Destination Among SMEs

Industrial units, which once shifted from Alappuzha, Kerala, to other parts in the country, are now returning to their earlier locations as they see better opportunities in the region.

Alappuzha, which was renowned only for its coir industry and backwater tourism, is now emerging as a preferred industrial destination in Kerala due to its improved infrastructural facilities and adequate government support.

The once flourishing industry of Alappuzha went through a phase of stagnation for a few years, as the government and corporate houses previously focused largely on Kochi, the upcoming industrial hub of Kerala. However, the industrial scene in Alappuzha district is all set to revive with the construction of advanced IT parks and establishment of new manufacturing units and other ventures by SMEs in the state.

With two new IT zones established in the nearby districts of Cherthala and Ambalappuzha, a number of small and mid-sized IT companies are planning to set up their units in Alappuzha district.

Moreover, development of a 66-acre IT park by Infopark and Cochin Special Economic Zone's (CSEZ) plan to establish a SEZ in the district, is likely to draw the attention of several small-scale technology firms looking to tap in to the potential opportunities in this region. The cost advantage and the huge pool of skilled labour force are also driving industries to establish subsidiaries here.

Something for everyone

Furthermore, the joint venture between iron castings manufacturer Autokast and Indian Railways to set up a production unit for the latter also presents bright prospects for upcoming small manufacturing plants in Alappuzha. A number of hospitality and travel units are also being set up in the area in an attempt to exploit the tourism potential of the place.

The initiatives taken by the state government to boost the coir manufacturing industry have served to help the ailing units regain their lost sheen. With the rapid emergence of new companies, Alappuzha district may soon become the next big industrial hub in South India.
